INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

There are two methods for installing the female button to receive the  pin and the hex head screw.

1. External Mount: Drill a seat hole in the cowl where you wish the pin to penetrate it.  This hole should be .250 to about .270" in diameter and about .425" in depth.  You  can use a 3/8" Forstner to produce a flat seat for the flange on the button.  Try the button in the hole and make sure you can align it with the pin when the pin is inserted into both hinge halves in the cowling.  Remove the pin and the button, then bond the button to place using the pin as a positioning guide while the bonding agent sets.  Use glass bid on the inside as needed to secure the button to place.  Make sure there is about .3" of clearance between the back (internal extent) of the female button and the hinges or the set screw will not seat all the way.  You can grind away a little of the Carbinge if it is in the way.

2. Internal Mount: Drill a hole in the cowl where the pin will penetrate it, but drill the hole only  .090" in diameter.  Drill a second hole in the cowling material centered on the first hole and oriented along the long axis of the pin starting from the INSIDE of the cowl rather than from the outside.  (this second step only needed if there is a block of material you will use to drill and seat the female button into.  Stop this hole before you penetrate the cowling surface at the aircraft nose.  Grind away any part of the female button flange that will keep the button from seating in the hole you just drilled.  You will insert the button such that the flange faces AFT instead of Forward as in method one.  Do a trial fit with the pin and then remove the pin and the button.  Now go back and drill through the cowling from the outside this time with about a .200" diameter drill.  Bond the button to place using the pin and set screw as positioning guides.  With this method, the set screw will be flush mounted or slightly beneath the level of the cowling skin when seated to place.  The female button will not show in this method.  This method is especially preferable when the surface to be penetrated is not perpendicular to the pin axis.  The more acute the angle the more desirable this method becomes.
