Meet The Board

photo of John Barrett

John Barrett is Leading Edge Composites' President and has been a member of the Board of Directors since the company's formation in 1998. His background in dentistry helped train him in advances in composite materials and bonding similar and dissimilar materials. He invited Bill Garrett, a friend and amateur inventor to join him in forming Leading Edge Composites.

When John started building a carbon fiber aircraft from a kit design in 1996, he added numerous improvements to the design; among them replacement of aluminum piano hinges with composite hinges. That experience helped him develop and fabricate hinges that could be successfully used to improve hinging in aircraft, boats, and similar composite construction applications.

Under John's energetic leadership, the company successfully developed Carbinge™ - a nonmetallic hinge. Carbinge™ has been marketed through word of mouth and via the internet. John has developed a following of customers in the experimental aircraft world who use Carbinge™ products to make aircraft lighter and stronger than those using conventional hinging systems in their applications.

John has operated successful businesses for thirty years and was a member of the board of directors of Washington Dental Service for 10 years from 1983 – 1993. He served as the Chairman of the Board of this non-profit company for two years from 1985-1987.
