October, 2003 Test Data
Due to minor changes in the construction
protocol, we decided to perform additional shear (pull) testing on our
hinge. We performed this test with a .080" steel pin using
a 2" wide (effective) piece of CarbingeÔ.
We were pleasantly surprised to find a limit load
of 1,000 lbs. for this hinge sample. The hinge did not fail at this load,
but the pin distorted very slightly. We have computed a new load
rating based on this test. CarbingeÔ
is now rated at 3,000 lbs. per foot with a 100% safety
factor. This is an increase of 300% over our former rating of 1,000 lbs.
per foot.
Additionally, we have now established a
.080" pin size as the standard. There is no longer a need to have a
smaller pin for cowl attachments vs. standard hinging uses.
